What's with the Flower?
It is a gardenia. The gardenia is a southern staple that thrives in warm climates and represents love. Most importantly they were Kate's mom Nancy's favorite flower.
Inspiration for Our Name
As we approached the two year anniversary of saying goodbye to my Mom, or Fancy Nancy as we lovingly called her, I knew it was time. Time to launch this idea that has been growing for a few years. Not to mention, I could hear my Mom saying, "What are you waiting for?"
I looked for any excuse to drag my feet because I wanted every part of this project to honor my Mom, but I was stumped with what the name should be. You see she was always one of my biggest supporters. Cheering me on and encouraging me to go after my dreams.
When I became a full time entrepreneur designing holiday cards and invitations was my side hustle. To me it was a natural compliment to my graphic design services. My Mom was one of my first "customers" commissioning an invitation for a baby shower she was hosting. But, Holiday Cards were her favorite as she had recently become a grandmom and wanted to show off her favorite little people.
I started designing Holiday Cards back in 2009 when I had an opportunity to design cards for a national warehouse chain to sell on their website. It wasn't until years later when I began designing them for family and friends that I got hooked. Sure it was fun to be a tiny part of celebrations for brides and moms-to-be or even that little one turning another year older. But through holiday cards I often got let in on the secret of a baby on the way or get the first glimpse of wedding photos or even that new little arrival.
In 2017 my perspective on life and business took a dramatic shift when my Mom was diagnosed with cancer. As stressful as it was to be her caregiver, I will forever be grateful that I was able to serve her in that way. It also helped me realize, more than ever, the importance of community.
That is where the initial idea for Simply Noted took root. In the process of developing the name and figuring out how to incorporate my Mom, I realized that this business gives me an unexpected opportunity to carry on a legacy she began many years ago. Whether it was at church, school or a group of homes, for many years Mom helped organize a "holiday bazaar" that gave crafters, bakers, makers and artists an opportunity to sell their goods. This also gave shoppers the opportunity to find fun and unique gifts to give not only at the holidays but throughout the year.
So it was only natural that Simply Noted launch with holiday cards and for the logo and name be a tribute to my Mom, Nancy. (When trying to decide on what to call this business I ended up incorporating my Mom's initials. N for Nancy and Noted. S for Skeen, her middle name, and Simply.)
